On Saturday 17th June Crossroads Caring Scotland held their annual Carer of the Year Awards in Inverness. The Carers’ Awards mark the end of Carers’ Week,  an annual awareness campaign to celebrate and recognise the vital contribution made by the UK’s 6.5 million carers.

Awards were made to four carers from across Scotland who have dedicated themselves to caring for their loved ones.

Fife Carer, Helen Hodgkinson, was a recipient of the Carer of the Year Award.

Helen cares for her husband who has Vascular Dementia, despite having health problems herself and other members of her family also requiring support due to ill health.
Helen’s priority is always others even though her husband’s condition means he is very demanding and she is often tired.

Helen was nominated by her Crossroads Fife Central Support Worker for her kindness, patience and thoughtfulness towards others but mainly for remaining strong for her wider family whilst dealing with the life changing effects of dementia.

Crossroads Fife Central would like to offer sincere congratulations to Helen on this well deserved award. However, we also wish to recognise the four nominated carers in Fife who received flowers as runners up for these awards, and all the other carers in Fife that we support. Their efforts enable their loved ones to remain at home, living full and satisfying lives.

I think that it is a truly great achievement to be awarded this great award. There is an abundance of awards that is being given out every year, there are the Oscar's and Emmy's, there is even the Guiness Book of World Records. However, I believe that being awarded the best carer is one of the most fulfilling one there is. Being praised and recognized for being kind to others is a truly wonderful experience. I am very glad to have witnessed something as marvelous as this.
